Please welcome author Gwynn White to the newest interview series from Author PK Tyler! This series is highlighting an amazing project, with 24 award-winning, and best-selling authors, Dominion Rising!

Gwynn White is a New York Times bestselling author of epic steampunk fantasy novels set on distant planets. All her stories have an adventure at the heart, mixed with a liberal sprinkling of romance and intrigue. To confuse things, she also writes adventure travel books set firmly on planet Earth. We love that Gwynn crosses boundaries, and writes really unique sci-fi and epic steampunk, so we hope you enjoy getting to know her a little better through our interview today!

PK Tyler: You’ve written books on your own, co-authored with Erin St. Pierre, and most recently you became one of the main coordinators along with myself for the Dominion Rising Boxed set. What drew you to take part in this project, and what keeps you busy day-to-day working on this project?

Gwynn White: Thank you for having me!

Can I say it was insanity? Oh…so you do want a serious answer… right. Here goes…

I had been in two multi-author boxed sets that hit the NYT bestseller list—Magic and Mayhem and Dark Humanity—and it was such an amazing buzz. I guess I wanted to do it all again, but this time as an organizer and not just as a participant. For me, my next career goal is to steer a set onto the NYT list. Why? Because it’s an amazing learning experience. I get to work daily with some of the best authors in the SFF indie community. We share marketing ideas and how-to advice that you cannot hope to get elsewhere. We also joke around, have fun, and spend way too much time together in our Facebook group. It has been a magical experience.

As for the work involved…ever heard the expression ‘herding cats’? Well, I’m thankful to say that I do very little of that. Our team is motivated, highly focused, and goal driven. All I have to do is nudge and guide. I also spend a LOT of time—and money—on BookBub ads.

PK Tyler: Dominion Rising is bringing science fiction and fantasy together. You have written an amazing steampunk series, Crown of Blood. Can you explain for our readers how steampunk fits within the science fiction and fantasy genre?

Gwynn White: Steampunk is fantasy and science fiction honed to mechanical perfection. For most people, though, when you say steampunk they think of zany Victorian dresses with cogs instead of lace, or chunky brass inventions bristling with tubes and pipes. That is certainly part of steampunk, but in literature, steampunk is far more diverse. Its versatility flows into magic, as well as the mechanical constructs. So, my Crown of Blood series mashes science fiction—microchips and surveillance cameras—with steam-driven airships. You can get away with that in steampunk.

PK Tyler: What will you be writing for Dominion Rising, and does it fall into the hard-core science fiction or fantasy category, or are you once again, brilliantly crossing genre boundaries?

Gwynn White: Erin St. Pierre and my contribution to the set is titled, Duchess of Death. It’s a dark sword and sorcery fantasy, filled with magic, fae, and a super hot dragon shapeshifter. It’s a prequel to our Dark Sleeping Beauty fairytale retelling trilogy Queen of Extinction.

PK Tyler: What authors do you find inspirational when you’re writing science fiction and steampunk?

Gwynn White: So many…where to begin? Lindsay Buroker is definitely one of them. I also love S.L Haung’s Russel Attic series, although that is more Urban Fantasy than science fiction. Celine JeanJean writes wonderful steampunk adventures, too.

PK Tyler: What are your hopes and dreams for the Dominion Rising authors and it’s release in August?

Gwynn White: The authors in this set have worked so hard, so consistently that I truly believe they deserve to hit NYT. I would love to see Dominion Rising in the top 20 on that list. Then, I hope that every author in the set gets great sell-through on the rest of their books.

Just…good things!

PK Tyler: What part of the administrative work you’ve done for this set has been the more rewarding?

Gwynn White: I’ve loved running the BookBub ads. That has been a lot of very expensive fun.  Because I live in Australia, I’m asleep when the US is awake, so I love getting up in the morning and seeing how my ads performed overnight. I also enjoy interacting with the other authors in our Facebook group. Lots of hard work, mixed with equal amounts of fun.

PK Tyler: Thank you Gwynn! It was so great to have you on the blog today. Readers, keep reading for more about Gwynn, and a chance to enter to win one of her books!

Weird, I know, but it makes me tick.

I live in Western Australia with my husband, Andrew, my three daughters, a yapping Toy Pomeranian, and a fantastic farm cat called Pixel.

When I’m not writing, I’m reading, traveling, herding kids around, taking dogs for walks, and avoiding all cooking.
