This week we welcome Annie Bellet to the Women in SciFi series!  Annie is a prolific author of many series. Her work has been included in the Hugo Nominees and has a devoted following of readers who having nothing but amazing things to say about her stories.  While she primarily writes Urban Fantasy, her inclusion in the Dark Beyond The Stars anthology highlights her ability to cross genres and write some awesomely solid Science Fiction.

She has a number of free books you can check out for yourself here: http://anniebellet.com/read-my-fiction/

P.K. Tyler – Please tell us a bit about The Twenty Sided Sorceress. Specifically, what is like to write a 7 book series?  That’s crazy intense!
Annie Bellet – It’s basically my homage to all the nerdy things I love. Writing a seven book series was a lot of work, but it was a lot of fun, too. I could play with characters and information reveals and really build the world. I’m excited to keep going.

PKT – What scientific principles guide The Twenty Sided Sorceress, and what kind of science fiction lover will be drawn towards this series?
AB – It’s pure Urban Fantasy. There’s no science in it beyond what you find in daily life (it is set in the modern world, after all). What kind of science fiction lover would like this series? One who likes video games, D&D, kickass characters doing crazy stuff, and especially one who likes Urban Fantasy.

PKT – You say in your biography that you love gaming, and table-top RPG’s. How has gaming influenced your writing if at all?
AB – Gaming is what is behind a lot of what I write. Even if it isn’t explicitly there, it is still a part of my background and what I love, so it creeps into everything I do.

PKT – Other than The Dark Beyond The Stars series, what science fiction are you working on now?
AB – I am working on a short story for an anthology that will probably be set in an alternate history past with a trip to Mars, but mostly these days I write fantasy, not SF. The SF is pretty much only short stories at the moment. I have some SF series ideas, but they are going to have to wait a few years.

PKT – Sometimes the genre of science fiction is divided into ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ science fiction. What are your thoughts on the two categories, and where would you place your writing within them?
AB – I think they are pretty loose distinctions. I’ve written both. The story in this anthology is more soft, Space Opera type science fiction. I’ve written other stories that were definitely hard SF and many in between. To me, character and the actual story are most important, so I use the science as needed for the story and let the kind of story and how it plays out dictate how “hard” the science is.
